PN welcomes setting up of Governance Committee, calls for full consultation

Friday, 17 January 2020, 19:33 Last update: about 5 years ago

The Opposition has welcomed the setting up of a Good Governance Cabinet committee but said acting earlier would have avoided “enormous” damage to the country.

In a statement, Opposition Leader Adrian Delia and MP Chris Said asked whether the setting up of this committee meant that the committee on constitutional change led, which is led by the President, will cease to exist. The PN also asked whether this new committee would take up the discussion that would lead to agreement on the changes that need to be implemented.

The PN wants the government to give assurances that any changes will be made in full consultation with the Opposition and all stakeholders, including civil society.

“Many changes require a two-thirds majority. As such, they should be discussed with the Opposition before they are presented in Parliament,” the party said.

The PN asked whether the government would be expecting the Opposition to say yes to proposals it was not consulted about.

It noted that it had recently published 15 proposals on good governance and a stronger democracy.
