‘I am extraneous to case’ Caruana says in resignation letter

Monday, 20 January 2020, 10:32 Last update: about 5 years ago

Justyne Caruana says she is extraneous to the case involving her husband, but was nonetheless handing her resignation from the post of Gozo Minister.

Part of the resignation letter was published by the Department of Information this morning, minutes after Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed media reports that she had resigned.

Caruana’s husband Silvio Valletta, who was deputy police chief and lead investigator in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, travelled to London to watch a football game with Yorgen Fenech, who is now accused of complicity in the crime. In another report, it was revealed that Fenech had filmed Valletta “fooling around” in Fenech’s car.

In her letter, Caruana said that “although I am totally extraneous to the story and have no connection with the facts, I am submitting my resignation from minister with immediate effect”.

Caruana said that she always carried out her duties with loyalty and dedication, and had always behaved with rectitude and correctness. “I am requesting the chance to defend my name because of my children,” she said.

In his answer, Abela thanked her for her services.
