Wednesday, 22 January 2020, 13:18 Last update: about 5 years ago

Education Minister Owen Bonnici has terminated all the consultancy contracts held by the parson who manipulated the Wikipedia page of a Council of Europe official.

Pieter Omtzigt’s Wikipedia page had been edited to read that he had paid Russia for fake information, and the edits came from a computer traced to a government ministry here in Malta.

Pieter Omtzigt is the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's rapporteur on 'The assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia and the rule of law in Malta. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had in the past taken aim at Omtzigt, and said that the Dutch MP had peddled conspiracy theories in the shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines plane over Ukraine in 2014.

The DOI did not name the consultant.

In a statement today, the Education Ministry said that it has terminated all consultancy contracts that it had with the person within the ministry, after an investigation found that on particular occasions in the past weeks this person used a computer within the ministry to change the profile on Omtzigt’s Wikipedia page.
