Yorgen Fenech, who currently stands accused of complicity in Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder, is currently being investigated in France, with prosecutors there seeking to determine whether proceeds from his assets in the country were used to finance the journalist's murder.
Fenech is part-owner of a hotel in France and has a number of stables where he keeps racing horses. Back in December, after Fenech was arrested and charged with the crime, the Caruana Galizia family and international press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders filed a criminal complaint in France, targeting Fenech's assets in the country. The complaint seeks to establish whether Fenech's assets in France could have been used to finance corruption in Malta or the murder of Caruana Galizia.
The French prosecutors said that their investigation would be carried out in cooperation with Maltese judicial authorities and that the results of their investigation would be shared with their Maltese counterparts.
