Part of Zurrieq fireworks factory blows up in suspected lightning strike

Part of a fireworks factory in Zurrieq blew up after a suspected lightning strike on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident took place at the Our Lady of Mt Carmel fireworks factory, at around 4.45pm. A large plume of smoke was seen rising above the complex.

It is believed that a lightning bolt struck a room that was used to store pyrotechnic material.

According to reports, no one was at the factory at the time of the explosion, and there have been no reported injuries.

Units from the police, the Civil Protection Department and the army's explosives disposal unit are on site to make sure that the area is safe.
