Parliament approves new method of appointing police commissioner

Thursday, 2 April 2020, 08:34 Last update: about 5 years ago

Parliament on Wednesday approved a new method of appointing a Police Commissioner.

The amendments provide for a new process whereby, for the first time in history, the Police Commissioner will be appointed following a public call and increased scrutiny by the Public Appointments Committee in Parliament.

The process will be more transparent as it drastically reduces the involvement of politicians, while also respecting the recommendations made by the Venice Commission.

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri described this law as revolutionary because, for the first time in our country, the government is putting forward a proposal that will reduce its decision-making power.

“This is yet another change that will strengthen the rule of law in our country. A change that will further reform the country and prepare it for the future,” stated the Minister.
