Rubble coming from roadworks being carried out in Pembroke is being dumped right into a Natura 2000 site, Nature Trust - FEE Malta said.

The NGO said it has reported this activity to the Environment and Resources Authority's enforcement unit for immediate action.

NTM said it is ironic that while the environmental organisation, together with support for the Pembroke Local Council and ERA, have been working hard to conserve further this site and taking various actions to reduce degradation, contractors working for Infrastructure Malta are operating to the extreme opposite to what the entities are trying you achieve.

Furthermore, such damages can have irreversible effects, it said, explaining that indigenous ecosystems may take years to recover while there is also a risk of the area being taken over by alien species with the disturbing of the habitat. 

"Nature Trust - FEE Malta reminds that since this site is declared as a Natura 2000 site, the Maltese authorities are dutybound to fully protect this site.  All activities within a Natura 2000 site should reflect the spirit of the conservation measures of the Management plan drawn up by ERA."

The NGO demanded immediate action to stop this abuse and that Infrastructure Malta orders the contractor to clear up the site without damaging the habitat further.

"The NGO feels that is is another case where one government entity is working in complete opposite to what another entity is trying to achieve.  

Nature Trust - FEE Malta said it is now considering to report the case to the EU - DG Environment.
