The German credit agency Scope Ratings evaluated 63 countries in respect of their ability to resist the effects of the pandemic.

"According to this detailed analysis, Malta placed among the top five countries. It was the only country in the European Union to be ranked so high. Worldwide, only Taiwan, China, Switzerland and Thailand were classified better than Malta. Countries such as Cyprus, Croatia and Romania were well down the rankings," the Maltese government said.

"The agency's economists noted the very good situation of the international balance of payments of our country, with one of the largest surpluses in the world. In addition, our country has a low national debt burden, and debt is not due to foreigners."

"This positive certificate for our country follows the conclusions of three international rating agencies -  FitchMoody's and Standard & Poor's - which, in recent weeks, confirmed that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the outlook for our country was stable. The International Monetary Fund also predicted that Malta would experience the least negative economic impact among member states of the European Union."
