No spike in domestic violence reports in April – Minister Michael Falzon

Thursday, 30 April 2020, 16:27 Last update: about 5 years ago

In April, the Family, Children's Rights and Social Solidarity Ministry did not see a spike or increase in domestic violence reports, Family Minister Michael Falzon said in Parliament.

"Whilst domestic violence, politically, is split between two ministries, that of the Family Ministry and the Ministry for Equality, this Ministry in particular has not seen an increase in domestic violence reports." Falzon was answering a parliamentary question asked by PN MP Claudette Buttigieg, who expressed that in numerous news reports, there had been an increase in domestic violence.

Falzon highlighted that in reality just because there aren't reports, does not mean that domestic violence is not happening. "In the given circumstance, it might be more difficult to file a report," explained Falzon. He explained that Appogg's helpline has not seen an increase in numbers whatsoever either.
