A new car parking facility catering for Freeport workers as well as the general public will be built in Birżebbuga, the government said on Saturday.
The parking solution will be built with an investment of €3.2 million from the Ministry for Tourism and financed by Malta Freeport as part of a joint collaboration with Projects Plus.
The parking building will be divided on three floors and there will be space for 450 vehicles. The ground floor will be dedicated to Freeport workers while the other two levels will be open to the general public. The project is expected to start this October.
Speaking during a visit to the site, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg said the holistic project will provide a solution for Freeport workers, residents and workers of the businesses in this village, as well as the hundreds of people who visit this area during the summer months.
“Government is committed to continue working to offer wise and sustainable solution for our transport challenges, including the issue of parking. While we continue working to incentivise the use of collective transport and smaller means, we will remain committed to improve road infrastructure and deliver public infrastructure such as this, towards more progress for all Maltese and Gozitan people,” he said.
Charging points, he noted, will be available on every floor of the building for electric vehicles.
Also speaking during the visit, Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli said the project will breathe new life into the Birżebbuġa community and can now officially become a reality after just this week a call was issued towards a much-deserved parking facility for residents and those visiting Birżebbuġa.
Apart from mitigating the parking problem, this parking facility will complement a holistic strategy for Birżebbuġa as the zone is expecting 2 major projects by the Tourism Ministry for families, including a family park in Bengħisa, the Minister said.
