Watch: Emergency - Saqqajja Road closed off after wall collapses in storm

Thursday, 28 May 2020, 14:35 Last update: about 5 years ago

The Saqqajja Road leading to and from Rabat is being closed off because a wall supporting the top part of the hill collapsed during Wednesday's storm, leading to danger.

A spokesman for Infrastructure Malta said the wall is not visible from the road.

But its collapse has made the stretch dangerous to drivers and the road needed to be closed until repair work is carried out.

Following yesterday’s storm, Infrastructure Malta architects and technicians are investigating the collapse of the retaining wall of the upper part of Saqqajja Hill, Rabat.

To ensure public safety, this part of Saqqajja Hill, towards Nikola Saura Street and Gorg Borg Olivier Street, will be closed until further notice.

Follow diversion signs to nearby alternative routes. Access to Mdina and Il-Kbira Street, towards the centre of Rabat, will remain open.

"We are working to launch emergency repairs as soon as possible," the agency said.
