PN MP Karol Aquilina received a package of cocaine by post back in March 2019, which he believes was sent as a plot to silence him by people who have been implicated in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Times of Malta reports.

The drugs were allegedly sent to him in a white envelope from Canada.

The Times of Malta reports thad he had not spoken about the situation publicly as it has been the subject of a magisterial inquiry which he had triggered. The inquiry, the news report reads, has thus far found that the package was sent to his office at the PN HQ but that there was no sign who was behind the package.

The MP told the newspaper that his belief is that the package was mailed to him in the hopes that he would open it and handle the substance, for then an anonymous tip to be sent to search his premises.

Aquilina is not the only MP who faced such a situation recently. PN MP Jason Azzopardi said on Facebook that "I can never forget that when in February 2019 I received a similar package and immediately reported it to the Police & insisted on a Magisterial Inquiry whilst informing the public about it." He expressed full solidarity with Aquilina.

Aquilina was recently in the news when a Presenter on ONE TV asked the police to investigate him for dangerous driving.

ONE Presenter Karl Stagno Navarro had broadcast footage which he says shows Aquilina not cooperating with the police by leaving his car in the middle of the road "to serve as an obstacle" to a car that was being escorted, and also alleged that he endangered police officers. In a letter to the police, Stagno Navarra alleges that charges were issued against Aquilina but were later withdrawn. PN MP Karol Aquilina has denied the allegations made against him, that he put officer's lives at risk through his driving. Stagno Navarro has requested has asked the police to investigate.
