A 78-year old diver died in Wied iz-Zurrieq after experiencing difficulties while in the water on Monday.
Police were informed that the man, who is Polish, was taken to hospital unconscious after being saved from the water at around 12pm.
Preliminary investigations by police from the Zurrieq station established that the man was diving at the time when he found himself in difficulty.
The man was brought up to shore by members of the Malta Red Cross who were stationed at the popular beauty spot.
They remained with the man until an ambulance arrived to take him to Mater Dei Hospital, however the man passed away shortly after.
Police investigations are still ongoing, while Duty Magistrate Astrid Grima is leading an inquiry.
