Yorgen Fenech's mother, Patricia, has accused PN MP Jason Azzopardi of lying when saying he never met her son. Azzopardi met Fenech at Fenech's wedding, Fenech's mother said.
Yorgen Fenech is the businessman accused of being the mastermind in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Fenech challenged Azzopardi to think hard about it.
"Jason Azzopardi are you sure? I am suspecting your memory is not serving you well these days. So you attest you never met my son in your life? Think well Dottore. And think hard," she wrote.
Fenech said on Facebook that Azzopardi was at her son's 2009 wedding. The Times of Malta asked Azzopardi whether he attended the wedding, to which he reportedly said he does not remember and that he used to receive an average of 90 wedding invites every year and would make it a point to attend each one for a bit.
Azzopardi posted on Facebook that "It is beyond ridiculous that those who do not want justice to prevail in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia are ridiculing themselves in a coordinated manner to dig a photo of me dating many, many years ago. From the specs I am wearing I can safely say several years ago. Certainly before 2008. This photo is showing me during a social activity and I am chatting with one of the guests who appears to be Yorgen Fenech. I certainly cannot remember each and every guest I met during each reception I attended more than 10 years ago. Who does?"
"Moreover, at that time so many years ago, Yorgen Fenech was a nobody. He knew who I was, but I did not know who he was. My actions speak for themselves, especially in Parliament and in the Law Courts. I most certainly did not ever meet, communicate or dine with Yorgen Fenech after news of 17 Black ownership came out in November 2018.That is the important cut-off date for any public figure. November 2018."
"Finally, what is most interesting is that those who are falling over themselves this morning, especially Labour and Delia trolls who are working in tandem to tarnish my reputation, do not realise that they are contradicting themselves in their orgy to attack my work: once according to them and Robert Abela there is nothing wrong for a politician to have an intimate relationship with Yorgen Fenech in 2019 (post 17 Black), let alone a meeting or communication as long as it did not take place after his interrogation by the Police in connection to the assassination. How credible are they when digging a photo of a casual encounter in a social activity attended by many people several moons ago?"
Patricia Fenech then posted a retort, and accused Azzopardi of lying again. "Do you ever imagine that I would go around fishing for your photos at social gatherings? I have much better things to do. That was during my son's wedding! This has absolutely nothing to do with the murder and I will never go into that. There are the courts and I have my lawyers to see to that. Do not try to deviate from the subject. You stated you never met my son ever, I contradicted you as I would definitely know who attended my own son's wedding... Old glasses or no glasses. Admit that you lied through your teeth on your own timeline. Just a reminder though as I am now truly believing that you are confusing things. I never said you met my son after the 17 Black saga. I only said that you were lying when you stated you never met him."
