A man was seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon after he fell down a shaft while working in a private residence in Senglea, the police said.

The accident took place in Triq il-Vitorja at 6pm.

The man, aged 52 of Birzebbuga, was assisted by members of the Civil Protection Department before being taken to hospital.

In a first statement, the police said that Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech is leading an inquiry. But, in a second statement, it said that this was not the case as the man's injuries were not deemed life-threatening.
