Adrian Delia calls for urgent Parliamentary debate on Covid-19 situation

Sunday, 16 August 2020, 12:11 Last update: about 5 years ago

Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said on Sunday that Parliament should convene with urgency on Monday to debate the Covid-19 situation.

Speaking on Net FM, Delia accused Prime Minister Robert Abela of “fleeing” the country and going on holiday while Malta was registering record numbers of Coronavirus cases.

“Abela does not care about the people. He went abroad to enjoy the summer. We are not talking here about things that can wait a few days. This is urgent,” Delia said.

The country had managed to bring down infection numbers thanks to the work of the health authorities and discipline by the people, and it was “totally irresponsible” to open to country up so quickly, he said.

The decision to allow mass events in order to make a few millions was “immoral,” Delia continued.

He called on Abela to convene Parliament urgently so that government and Opposition can decide on a way forward with regard to the pandemic. “Let’s work together so that we can get out out of this dark alley we have run into.”

“Politicians are there to serve, they cannot abdicate their duties,” Delia said.  “What is happening now is of great concern. These are very big numbers for a country of this size.”

Delia said health is the absolute priority, but the country had lost “precious months” where it should have been preparing its economy for post-pandemic recovery. The vouchers alone are not enough, he said.

“The government is unprepared and does not really listen. It has a duty to listen to the stakeholders and come up with solutions.”

He was also asked about the resignation of Attorney General Peter Grech. The resignation, along with those of Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri, Konrad Mizzi, Chris Cardona and Lawrence Cutajar showed that the Opposition is not truly weak. This is the mantra being repeated by those trying to harm the PN, he said.

“Konrad Mizzi had pledged to stay on, but after 20 mins on the witness stand in the Vitals case, which I instituted, he resigned. In the coming months, I will continue to uncover corruption and fight to get our hospitals back.”

Delia said that political responsibility alone was not enough. Those involved in wrongdoing would have to pay for their actions and pay back every cent that has been stolen from the people, he said.
