MEP Alex Agius Saliba appointed as the Rapporteur on the European Parliament report on the Protection of Persons with Disabilities through the European Union. The Committee on Petitions in the European Parliament has decided to draft an own-initiative report based on the petitions received with regard to the obstacles that persons with disabilities face in their daily life, and Alex Agius Saliba will be the MEP in charge.
MEP Alex Agius Saliba commented on his appointment: “I am honoured to be appointed as the Rapporteur on Protection of Persons with Disabilities through the European Union and to be the voice of the voiceless. My report will stress direct and indirect discrimination that people with disabilities face in the European Union and its Member States, and on the need of inclusive and accessible education for all, accessibility in transport and infrastructure, digital accessibility and social inclusion in communities. People with disabilities should be protected against all forms of discrimination and should be able to enjoy the same rights as all of us.”
The Report will call on the Commission to ensure that the Member States are in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
As the Rapporteur and a member of the European Parliament's Disability Framework, I will continue raising awareness and promoting equal rights and opportunities in the EU and the Member States for people with disabilities, especially now, when the COVID-19 crisis reveals the ongoing segregation and discrimination of people with disabilities in all aspects of their daily lives," Agius Saliba said.
