During the routine screening of passengers departing to Istanbul from the Malta Airport, Customs Canine Officials, alongside the Anti-Money Laundering team, intercepted nearly €12,000 in undeclared cash on a passenger.

Sophie, the canine sniffer dog, was screening luggage and passengers waiting to board their flight to Istanbul when the dog made a positive indication to a particular passenger and his belongings.

When the AMLT officials approached the passenger and asked him how much cash he was carrying, he declared he was carrying roughly 8,000 euros. Not convinced by his answer the AMLT officials escorted the passenger to the departures office and carried out a search on him and his belongings.

Subsequently, a total of 12,120 euros were discovered. The passenger was fined due to the excess undeclared cash as per legislation.
