The supply of fresh milk in Malta is in peril, PN says

Monday, 26 October 2020, 14:45 Last update: about 4 years ago

The supply of fresh milk in Malta is in peril, the PN said in a statement, arguing that farmers and milk producers are facing pre-Covid-19 costs while sale and consumption from tourists reduced.

"As a question of national interest and food security, we need to support the milk industry by improving local consumption and investing in aid mechanisms until the market again reaches pre-pandemic levels."

The PN said that while it would be illegal to promote Maltese milk directly, there is no prohibition on public campaigns to promote the qualities of milk products while not considering its origin.

Fresh Maltese milk contain a lot of Omega 3 and calcium that are of benefit to a large number of children and adults, the PN said.

Maltese farms that produce milk have a fundamental role in protecting the countryside as around half of agricultural land produces food for more than 6,000 cows, the PN added.
