The Labour Party has thanked Finance Minister Edward Scicluna for his work in politics over the past years.

It was announced yesterday that Scicluna will be stepping down as Finance Minister and as an MP as the government wants him to take up the post of the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta. The government will be proposing to the European Central Bank that he be appointed.

In its statement, the PL said that in 2013 "the government inherited a country which faced an excessive deficit procedure, due to the previous PN administration."

"It was Minister Scicluna who, over the past years, not only led Malta out of this financial situation, but helped the country achieve unprecedented economic growth."

"Through this growth the country was able to achieve one surplus after another, and the government was able to announce impeccable budgets that improved the quality of life of people in the country."

The PL said that the good economic situation helped Malta face the Covid-19 pandemic.

The party thanked  Scicluna and wished him well in the position he was nominated for.
