The PN has hit out at the news that the government lost out of EU funds for a gas pipeline, saying that this confirms how the government's energy policy is antiquated and lacks vision.
In 2019 Malta tried to get EU financing for a pipeline worth around €400 millionm but it was punished by the Commission's de-prioritisation of gas projects in order to move faster on climate change targets, MaltaToday reports.
MaltaToday reported that Malta will not be getting any EU cash to finance its gas pipeline to Sicily, as the European Commission did not select the island's final bid in the final round of the Connecting Europe Facility Funds. It reports that the PCI list in 2021 will be more stringent on gas projects and thus Malta will need to go for a pipeline which can transport hydrogen and not just gas.
"The EC's decision certifies that while PL politicians were lost in the power station and the gas tanker, technological development passed them by and now we have a situation where the county did not look to a future with hydrogen technology," the PN said in a statement.
The PN said that today's news is not the result of the lack of work by workers, but the fruit of a government mistake.
