PM ignoring experts, leaving us with high Covid-19 cases and slow return to normality – Grech

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said on Sunday that the government is choosing to ignore the expert opinion of doctors, leaving us with a high number of Coronavirus cases and a situation that takes us far away from normality.

During a political event in Mosta, Grech said that several medical experts have stated that they are ‘unprepared’, and warned that Prime Minister Robert Abela should stop telling the public that we will be returning to normality in May, as it will only give everyone false hope.

Grech spoke about the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine and said that the current rate is far too slow, urging the government to speed up its vaccination rollout.

He also spoke about the current situation in which many people are eager to go out, and expressed his hope that these people will relive the Maltese Mediterranean life soon, and not a life of being closed indoors.

He highlighted that the Nationalist party is uniting and is also bringing many people together too.

“We are a party that is becoming popular, day by day, but never populist,” he remarked.

This week, the Nationalist party celebrated the first 100 days of Bernard Grech as party leader. He said that a lot of work has been achieved during his first 100 days, including work that has yet to bear fruit.

On the other hand, “the Labour Party and the Prime Minister seem to be agitated with the fact that the Nationalist Party is attracting and uniting many people, including young ones. For this reason, he continues to make public statements about topics such as abortion, euthansia and cannabis.”

Instead of focusing on the real concerns expressed by many young people during this time, including feelings of anxiousness and worry, Abela continues to insist that everything is normal, but in reality, this is far from normality, he said.

Looking back at PM Abela’s first year in office, the PN leader said that one can’t help but mention the pandemic and the fact that it took only ten months to reshuffle his Cabinet.

“This confirmed his incompetency and clearly showed that he is a person who is solely concerned with his own partisan interests in order to ensure he stays on top. He does not care about you or your families,” Grech said.

In addition, he highlighted that the Labour Party continues to ignore what the people in this country are feeling and only cares about its own interests and needs.

Grech called on Prime Minister Robert Abela to work together with humility, honesty and maturity.

“Let us sit down together and show people out there that we are capable of putting our partisan beliefs and interests aisde and work together,” he said.

In addition, Gech also made reference to Gavin Gulia's abrupt and surprising resignation on Wednesday, minutes after he was sworn in. He remarked that this act clearly shows that Abela chooses to do whatever he wants to please his own needs and wants.

“I want the electoral system and the parliament of Malta to truly be the highest institution of our country. I want to have each and every deputy, to be truly honourable and honoured to be serving within the highest institution of the country,” Grech said.

The party is working to attract more talent and to bring in more people who are capable and who have something to offer.
