A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with an attempted murder in Gzira early this morning, police said.
In a statement, the police said that they had found substances suspected to be drugs in the man’s residence.
Police said that at around 7am on Friday, Sliema district police received a telephone call from a person who said that a man had broken into his house in Triq ix-Xatt, Gzira, doused the rooms in petrol and started a fire.
The person said that the fire was extinguished with the help of a woman.
District police and police from the major crimes unit and homicide department went on site and found the victims – a 36-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman. The man had to be taken to Mater Dei hospital for treatment to some burns he had sustained.
He was certified as suffering from light injuries.
Investigations resulted in the identification of the alleged aggressor, and his residence in Triq l-Empire Stadium in Gzira was circled and he was arrested.
A search in the residence led the police to half a kilo of what is thought to be cannabis, a number of pills thought to be ecstasy, and other items which are suspected to be related to drug trafficking.
Duty Magistrate Nadine Lia was informed of the case and is leading an inquiry.
Police investigations are ongoing.
