Works to fix Mellieha substation after fire will soon conclude, Enemalta says

Enemalta engineers worked overnight after a fire broke out at the Avenue Solana Hotel substation in Mellieha, an Enemalta statement read.

The fire had broken out at 8pm Tuesday and damaged the low voltage panel, but did not damage the transformer and other important apparatus.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but is is clear that it was not premeditated, Enemalta said. The fire started when there was nobody as the substation.

A number of Mellieha residents had a power cut last night as a result of Enemalta shutting off electricity to the substation in order for CPD officials to safely put out the fire.

Enemalta used a generator to provide electricity in the shortest time possible to those residents who were affected, it said.

"These consumers will later have a short power interruption until electricity again begins to be sent directly through the substation instead of a generator."
