Planning Minister Aaron Farrugia has again called on the Opposition to nominate its member on the board of the Building and Construction Authority.

In a Facebook post, Farrugia said he has been urging the Opposition to nominate its representative for three weeks. “I feel that the Opposition is not cooperating enough so that we can conclude the process through which we will bring about changes in the sector,” he wrote.

The Building and Construction Authority is being set up as part of a wide-ranging reform stemming from an expert report drawn up in the wake of the tragedy that claimed the life of Miriam Pace last year. The Bill that will set up the authority is currently being debated in Parliament. But Farrugia hinted that the process is being delayed due to the Opposition’s reluctance to take part.

“If it was up to me, we would have met today,” he wrote.

He appealed to the Opposition to stop postponing and to be available so that Parliament’s Committee on the Consideration of Bills can approve the law that sets up the authority and to nominate a representative on the BCA board.”

“This is a subject on which we need to work together and show the will to take decisions,” he said.
