Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi has branded former economy minister Chris Cardona a “liar” after the latter said he was not cautioned when interrogated by the police on Saturday.
Cardona confirmed he was taken in for questioning over his alleged links to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, but said he was not on police bail and had not been cautioned.
The former Labour deputy leader was questioned after Vince Muscat ‘il-Kohhu’ claimed that Cardona was behind an approach to the Degiorgio brothers in 2015, settling on a price of €150,000 to kill the journalist. The plan was later abandoned.
He also told investigators that, based on information given to him by Alfred Degiorgio, Cardona was “aware” of the 2017 plot.
He also said he had dropped off Degiorgio at Cardona’s ministry in the summer of 2017.
Cardona is understood to have denied all allegations during the questioning by police.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Azzopardi, who is one of the lawyers for the Caruana Galizia family, said Cardona had lied, claiming he had actually been cautioned during his interrogation.
Normally, a person is cautioned when they have been formally identified as a suspect to a crime.
