A record 336 cases of Covid-19 were recorded Tuesday, taking the number of active cases to a new high of 2,931, health authorities said.

It is the first time that the number of cases has surpassed 300. The previous record was 263 on 28 February.

It is the third time in a week that Malta hit a peak in the number of new cases. On 26 February, there were 258.

The number of active cases registered today, 2,931, is also a record, with the previous high of 2,835 on 19 January.

There were also three deaths recorded today, including a 41-year-old man, who died at Mater Dei Hospital. He becomes the 200th male victim.

The two other deaths were of a 61-year-old woman, at Mater Dei Hospital, and a 78-year-old woman, who died in her private residence.

In all, the number of Covid-19 cases as we approach the first anniversary of the first case is 22,993, of whom 19,743 have recovered, including another 80 today. The total number of deaths is now 319.

The number of swab tests carried out was 3,572, for a total of 705,682.

The health authorities said that until yesterday the number of vaccination doses is 81,883, of which 29,021 were second doses.

In a reaction on Facebook, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said that the Prime Minister's words of two weeks ago - that we will hit the ground running after Covid - is more hurtful as for the third time in a week we hit a new record.

We will win the fight against Covid-19 by being serious about it, not by futile words, Grech said.
