New measures will be introduced in the coming hours, but a lockdown won’t be taken into consideration, Prime Minister Robert Abela told the press on Wednesday.
This comes after a surge in Covid-19 cases, with the number active cases reaching 3,000 for the first time.
“The government’s decisions have consistently been that we don’t opt for a lockdown, despite the pressure we had from various factors,” Abela said.
“I still believe that the most prudent decision is not to go into lockdown and to keep a balance between the protection of lives and the livelihoods. Let us remember that people’s lives also depend on their businesses.”
Speaking in parliament yesterday, Abela announced that one of the measures the Government is looking at is to increase fines for breach of existing regulations.
Yesterday Malta saw the highest number of daily cases on record, with 336 cases being found.
Pressure has been mounting on the government to introduce more measures by both the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) and the Medical Association of Malta (MAM).
