Free internet and computers will be provided to students in need to ensure that they continue to receive an education when schools shut their doors on Monday, Education Minister Justyne Caruana said.

Schools will remain closed until after the Easter holidays as part of a new set of measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Caruana said the Ministry for Education is giving its reassurance that it is looking at all the possible scenarios and challenges which can arise.

Preparatory work is underway to ensure all students will continue to receive quality education by means of high standards of digital platforms, she said.

“Aware of the fact that we may have students who do not have access to the internet or do not have a computer, the ministry will launch various initiatives including free internet and the provision of computers. We are referring to the period when our schools will be closed and so we in turn will not only provide assistance, not only provide the service, but also give peace of mind to our students and our families.

In addition to providing free internet service to cover the period that the schools will be closed, for those students who do not have a computer, laptop or tablet, the Ministry will provide them with a computer to use during the period that the schools are closed until 11 April.

The government said it is committed to help those who are in need of special assistance, particularly during this month when our children will follow online teaching.
