Prime Minister Robert Abela has emphasised the need for an accelerated vaccine production and distribution process in a European Council meeting.

The European Council meeting happened virtually due to the pandemic. The first topic of discussion was the vaccine as a powerful tool against the fight for control over the pandemic.

“The importance of an accelerated vaccine production and distribution process cannot be understated: the vaccine will pave the road to normality and freedom of movement of people”, Abela said in the meeting.

Abela also stated that the Covid-19 passport idea could be sidelined if herd immunity is achieved across the European Union.

Talks on the importance of the single market followed, where Abela stated that the key for better competitive opportunities in Malta is the investment in the digital sector.

The council was all in agreement with the positive outcome of the new relations between the European Union and the United States of America President Joe Biden.

Talks with the president show promise for further talks to happen between the two parties.

In a final statement, the council discussed the strength of the Euro currency and Malta’s stance was clear in highlighting the importance of a green economy and new digital sectors in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the currency.
