Concession agreement signed between government and Haileybury Malta

Minister for Education Justyne Caruana presided over the signing of a concession agreement between the Government of Malta and Haileybury Malta. Through this agreement, a Haileybury school in Malta is becoming an immediate reality. The agreement will see the former Mtarfa British Military Hospital converted into an international school.

“This is an important step for investors and foreigners in Malta, as well as local Maltese people who want their children to undergo a programme of studies which is recognised internationally”, said the minister. She added that apart from converting the building into an international school, it will also be completely restored and renovated.

In a recorded message, Martin Collier, Master of Haileybury UK, said that he is delighted that this agreement will see the opening of the first European Haileybury partner school in Malta, which will join several other partner schools around the world.

Haileybury’s highly successful parallel education model, outstanding academic results, strong international focus, and more than 150 years of history will be a perfect fit for Malta and its current aspirations and ideals.

The school will cater for Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary, as well as Higher Secondary education, equivalent to Malta’s SEC and MATSEC levels. The school will operate with Haileybury UK and is envisaged to maintain the same standards as Haileybury UK. With respect to the Sixth Form levels (ages 16 and 17), the school will offer pupils a choice between the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A levels, and will also operate a nursery.

The development and finishing are estimated to take approximately 18 months to complete, with the first cohort of pupils joining the scholastic year starting September 2022.

Malta will be the fifth member of the Haileybury family of schools providing a full spectrum of formative tools preparing students for a fast and ever-changing world. The Maltese campus shall be home to a pre-school, primary and secondary schools, and will be offering IGCSE, A levels and the International Baccalaureate programmes.

Permanent Secretary Frank Fabri signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry for Education, whilst Ruth Galea Trapani, and Anthony Michael Polak signed on behalf of Haileybury Malta Ltd.
