The government is investing a total of €35 million to upgrade the educational infrastructure in Gozo, Education Minister Justyne Caruana said.
She was visiting the Victoria campus where €10 million will be spent.
“This is a €10 million project and is part of a massive €35 million investment in the educational infrastructure in Gozo. In the coming days, we will announce a package of €25 million which will be invested in four primary schools as well as in structures and modernisation in other schools, making them environmentally sustainable as well as to address the needs of Gozitan students. This shows the government’s commitment to education not only in Malta, but also in Gozo,” she said.
“This project is the only one of its kind in our country. This campus will include a childcare centre, a kindergarten, the primary school, the middle school, the senior school, as well as the Sixth Form,” she added.
The project involves the construction of a new Primary School in Victoria, Gozo, replacing the current one, which is about 160 years old. The new school will be in a different location from the existing one and will be built on the existing educational campus in Victoria, with a project including the expansion and modernisation of the Middle School on the same campus.
The new school will have 16 classes for the Primary School years, and 10 classes for kindergarten, while it will also have classes for specific subjects, including the teaching of science, information technology and art. The Primary School and Kindergarten together will be able to accommodate about 650 children. There will also be a childcare centre and several sport facilities in the new school building.
The size of the school will be about 8,000 square meters, with 3,000 of them allocated for children’s sport and recreation.
The excavation work at the site has been completed and was carried out under the supervision of archaeologists from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage as archaeological remains have been found at the site and analysis on these remains is being carried out.
Construction work on the new Primary School as well as the extension of the Middle School is at an advanced stage.
In Gozo, the government, through the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools, is investing around €35 million in the extensive regeneration of the primary schools at Nadur, Żebbuġ, Ta’ Kerċem and Għarb. Apart from these projects, the facades of all the Primary Schools in Gozo will be given the necessary upgrading, and projects also include the installation of green walls.
During her visit, the Minister for Education was accompanied by the two heads of school and also by the Chief Executive of FTS Neville Young.
