Olympian Neil Agius to attempt swim from Tunisia to Sicily

Wednesday, 26 May 2021, 15:12 Last update: about 4 years ago

Former Olympic swimmer Neil Agius announced that he will be attempting to swim from Tunisia to Sicily, covering a 150km open water world record distance in under 60 hours.

Agius will swim an additional 50km when compared to his 2020 Sicily to Malta swim, with the added challenge of crossing between two continents from Africa to Europe.

The duration it takes Agius to complete this challenge ranges from 45-50 hours, depending on the weather conditions.

He said that training for such a challenge is very hard as no one has ever done the distance he is attempting to cover, so there isn’t a model to work on.

Agius will not be wearing a wetsuit and will not be allowed to touch the boat at any time during the challenge.

He is expected to attempt this swim between 26 June and 7 July as weather conditions should be optimal. He will start from Eastern Hawaria, a small village in Tunisia, and swim to Kartibubbo in Sicily.

The swim will be done once again to raise awareness for Wave of Change. This will be done by picking up six pieces of plastic anytime, anywhere. The aim is to pick up one million pieces of plastic from local areas by the end of Summer 2021 and make a wave of change across Malta and Gozo.
