HSBC heist trial put on hold while new witnesses are called in

Thursday, 27 May 2021, 13:12 Last update: about 4 years ago

The trial in connection with the failed 2010 HSBC headquarters height has been put on hold indefinitely on the grounds that the court still has to hear new “witness or witnesses” testify.

Judge Giovanni Grixti made the declaration on Thursday morning, amidst new claims about the heist.

Vince Muscat, known as il-Koħħu, and Darren Debono, known as it-Topo, are awaiting trial for their alleged involvement in the failed heist on the Qormi headquarters of the bank.

Muscat pleaded guilty to being one of the hitmen who killed Daphne Caruana Galizia and was sentenced to 15 years in prison as a result earlier this year.

He has claimed that he can link two high-profile Labour politicians to the attempted heist.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela, who was a manager at HSBC at the time, is one of the MPs which both Muscat and PN MP Jason Azzopardi have alleged was involved in the heist.

Abela has filed libel proceedings against Azzopardi on the claims, and continues to deny any connection with the crime.
