Eco-school committee environment action plan 'will not remain on paper' – Abela

The Eco-School committee presented an action plan on the Auberge de Castille to Prime Minister Robert Abela after an environmental audit was carried out by students of St Ignatius of Ħandaq College.

The committee began its work in January 2021 by visiting the Auberge de Castille, observing the day-to-day operation and taking notes. This was done in order to propose how it can implement more sustainable measures to mitigate the impact on the environment.

PM Abela noted that the action plan presented was very detailed and stated that “this would not be an action plan that would remain on paper.”

Abela said that “the next step is to implement the report. You will be the students who certify the work we have done in the Auberge Castille.”

He thanked the students for the work they have done with such dedication and love for a better environment.

“The theme of sustainable development is one that is being given priority by this government and we want students like you to be the catalysts for change while showing your abilities in favour of the Maltese society,” Abela said.

Among various recommendations, the students suggested leaving the windows more open for offices to enjoy the natural light and better air circulation. The students also proposed to increase the number of plants as they improve air quality in the workplace, to use paper generated from sustainable forests and to make use of eco-friendly hand soap.

The Eco-School initiative is not only an out-of-class activity through which students work for the environment, but it also serves as an example for all adults to be more aware of measures, even small ones, at their workplace.
