Updated: Damaged underground cable leads to power cut in central Malta

Wednesday, 23 June 2021, 09:55 Last update: about 4 years ago

A damaged underground cable has led to a power cut in the central part of Malta, Enemalta said.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Enemalta said that its engineers and technicians are working to repair the damage which led to a power cut in Naxxar, Gharghur, Mosta and Lija.

Electricity has been restored in some of the affected areas, as Enemalta is using its distribution system to provide power from other sub-stations.

In a media statement later on Wednesday afternoon, Enemalta said that the damage to the underground cable was due to a strong variation in temperature caused by significant overheating, which resulted in the load on the cable increasing in a short period of time.

Enemalta said that they could not exclude further interruptions in service in the coming period of time as damage are assessed and addressed.

They said that they have enough electricity supply to cope with the demand, and that interruptions were localised.
