Bernard Grech to meet MCESD social partners to discuss Malta’s grey listing

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has requested to attend a meeting with the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) in order to hear their views and discuss the way forward following Malta's greylisting by the FATF.

The meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday 30 June at 12:30pm.

In a letter written by PN Leader Grech, addressed to the chairperson of the MCESD James Pearsall, he said that following a number of bilateral meetings with various consituted bodies, including members of MCESD, it appears that Malta's grey listing from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requires a broad and structured discussion.

Grech said that this discussion should involve all social partners concerned to identify the reasons that led to such a result, to assess the impact on business, on the economy and to overall identify ways on how to remove Malta from the grey list and place it back on the white list.

"Through an informed and inclusive discussion, we can start to gradually build the right path for our country in order for it to find its place back on the white list of jurisdictions that merit the confidence of international investors," Grech wrote.

He remarked that such an occasion will not only allow the opposition to refine its work with the views of the constituted bodies represented in the MCESD, but it will also allow the opposition to present a number of initiatives and proposals in order to address Malta's greylisting.

"If this is not addressed and taken seriously, thousands of jobs and businesses in Malta will be in danger," Grech said.

Grech's request was accepted.
