An inmate at Corradino Correctional Facility died nearly three weeks after she was found unconscious in her cell

Prison officials had at the time described it as a suicide attempt. 

The woman had been hospitalised on 16 June after being given first aid by doctors and nurses at the prison. 

In a statement on Sunday, the prison authorities said that the woman had been receiving regular psychological monitoring and had last met a mental health expert on 3 June.

A psychiatric report indicated that she was making progress and was not a suicide risk, the authorities said.

A police investigation is underway while an inquiry is being led by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech.
