Cultural heritage watchdog intervenes on Infrastructure Malta works near Wignacourt Aqueduct

Thursday, 22 July 2021, 20:05 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage intervened on works being carried out by Infrastructure Malta in the vicinity of Wignacourt Aqueduct in Attard.

"The Superintendence has instructed the contractor to halt works until a site visit could be carried out in order to assess the situation. SCH officers inspected the site earlier today and is currently directing the architects responsible for works on how to proceed to safeguard all parts of the aqueduct in line with the provisions of the Cultural Heritage Act."

The move came after a post was made on social media, which read: "The new central ring road construction is destroying the 400 year old Wignacourt Aqueduct in Balzan.  This part of the Aqueduct in question is low lying and does not have arches, bit it is still part of the Wignacourt Aqueduct and 400 years old. Can someone investigate and take action urgently please? Excavation is taking place now."
