Call for Zammit Lewis resignation: Repubblika urges public to join Tuesday protest

Civil society NGO Repubblika is urging the public to attend a protest on Tuesday where it will step up its call for Justice Minister Zammit Lewis to resign.

The minister is under fire after the publication of more Whatsapp conversations he shared with 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech, the man charged with masterminding the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Zammit Lewis allegedly also spoke to Fenech after he addressed a press conference in 2019 during which he mocked attempts for justice over the businessman’s secret Dubai company.

Repubblika asked what Prime Minister Robert Abela is waiting for to sack Zammit Lewis.

It said the minister’s position has become untenable after the publication of his chats with Fenech. It is unacceptable for the minister responsible for justice and good governance to fool around with Fenech after it became known that he owned the company that was set to receive thousands of euro in corruption from the Electrogas deal, the group said.

Zammit Lewis had also tried to ridicule the person (former PN Leader Simon Busuttil) who went to court so that this corruption would be investigated.

“Our country needs action against the impunity that has gripped it: words alone mean nothing.”

It said the PM has a clear choice before him. He must either remove Zammit Lewis or else shoulder the responsibility of his actions.

The NGO is organising a protest in front of the Justice Ministry on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
