Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo and MTA Chairman Gavin Gulia announced a €35,000 investment to continue the restoration works at Auberge de France.

Birgu Mayor John Boxall said that although the restoration works had been started by the local council, "If it wasn't for the help the tourism ministry provided, the project would not be able to be completed."

Auberge de France houses the local council but Boxall confirmed that although the Auberge houses a local administrative office, "tourists would be kept in mind."

In his final statement Boxall said that the works would be completed by the end of year and "Birgu will become a tourist destination as per the wishes of the local council"

Gulia as chairman of the tourism authority said that "we have the luxury of saying that our villages and cities have become travel destinations within themselves."

He also said that through these investments, "we no longer have to advertise Malta as the only travel destination. Cities and villages like Valletta and Birgu have become their own travel destinations."

"We are improving our cultural and historical values as a country", Gulia said in his final statement.

Bartolo closed off the press conference by saying that "as a ministry, we undertake investments like this not only for the tourists but for the benefit of all the Maltese families, especially the people of Birgu."

Bartolo also said that this year during the pandemic, the french tourist sector has increased when compared to previous years. "It is currently one of the biggest markets for tourism in our country."

In his final statement Bartolo said that this is not the final investment in Birgu since "as a country we seek to create tourist niches in these cultural and historical places."
