A new sea transport service between the Grand Harbour and Esplora was inaugurated as part of a project to restore the Kalkara coast near the facility, which was done through an investment of €2.5 million.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Robert Abela said: "This project also fits within our vision for the environmental sector, as through its function it will fit in with our push to reduce pollution, while continuing to improve the maritime sector."

He said that this project is but one of many that are taking place in Cottonera and the surrounding area.

Minister for Equality, Research, Innovation and the Co-Ordination of Post Covid-19 Strategy Owen Bonnici was also present.

He expressed his satisfaction that this area is being restored and given back to the public.

On the restoration of the coast, he said: "Now we will be able to enjoy the restored pedestrian area and the beautiful scenery that allows for one of the most beautiful views of the island."

The rehabilitation of the Esplora coast will provide safe access to the public along the Kalkara coast up to the Cot Lift.

MCST CEO Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando said that the Bighi Cot Lift was also restored.
