Members of the Civil Protection Department are still battling a fire in a privately-owned waste plant in Marsa, 12 hours after it developed.

The fire, according to a statement issued by the Environmental Resources Authority, developed last night.

No-one was injured.

The scrapyard is in Garibaldi Street, part of which was closed to traffic.

The ERA said it will investigate the incident.

In a post on Facebook just after 11am, the CPD said members from various fire stations are currently fighting an industrial fire that broke late yesterday evening at a scrapyard in Marsa.

29 officers and firefighters together with 11 fire appliances are currently on site battling the flames, with around 320,000 litres of water being used so far, it is expected to take long hours for the fire to be entirely put out, the CPD said.

The Civil Protection Department thanked the Department’s volunteers, the NGOs who are assisting the force, the district police, water contractors, the Water Services Corporation, and the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital, for their assistance.
