Court decision shows that Edward Scicluna’s Central Bank position is no longer tenable – Repubblika

A court judgement wherein Edward Scicluna lost a libel suit against Simon Busuttil shows that his Central Bank position is “absolutely not tenable,” the NGO Repubblika said.

The NGO was reacting to a court decision wherein Magistrate Rachel Montebello ruled on Monday that former PN leader Simon Busuttil’s tweet, which said that Scicluna’s position was not tenable while he was under investigation for money laundering, was not libellous.

Repubblika said in a statement that Scicluna should take the decision as another sign that his public office role is not tenable.

The NGO said that his position became untenable when a magistrate opened an inquiry into him and Konrad Mizzi and Chris Cardona over the sale of three hospitals by the state (which was the subject of Busuttil’s tweet).

The NGO said that while Scicluna did not become a European Commissioner, he did become governor of the Central Bank – a key role for Malta to re-gather its reputation as an honest financial services jurisdiction.

Instead, Repubblika said, the country has a governor who is “involved in a money laundering investigation” – quoting Busuttil’s tweet.
