Roberta Metsola to face two other EPP candidates for Presidency nomination

Monday, 22 November 2021, 14:53 Last update: about 3 years ago

Roberta Metsola will face two other nominees from within the European People's Party (EPP) in her bid to become the EPP's sole candidate for the post of President of the European Parliament.

The nomination period came to a close today, and aside from Metsola, who is the First Vice-President of the European Parliament, two other MEPs - Esther de Lange and Othmar Karas - from her party have submitted their nominations.

Metsola, when she had announced her nomination submission, said: "I want to help get people in our Member States to believe in Europe - and the Parliament can support MEPs as we bring European decision-making closer to people in different villages, towns and cities across Europe."

"The challenges Europe is facing, but also the opportunities, require the Parliament to have a strong, clear voice and I am ready to do my part as we work together to re-capture the enthusiasm for our project."

On Wednesday, the EPP will vote to select which one of the three will be the party's sole candidate. Then, in January, the EU Parliament will choose who from the candidates of the European Parliament's political parties will take up the role of President of the Parliament.

There is an agreement between the EPP, S&D and Renew Europe for the MEPs of these parties to support the EPP's nominee for the Parliament's President for the second term. However, there has been talk of the current EU Parliament's President - David Sassoli, also contesting, despite this agreement.

PN MEP David Casa said that this is a unique moment for Malta as Metsola has decided to contest. He said that he immediately told her that she would have his support, even if it means he would need to give up his role as Quaestor.

Casa had been elected to the post in July 2019. The Quaestors are elected for two and a half year terms and are responsible for different aspects of the Parliament's administration, such as the Parliament's communication set-up.
