The booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will soon be included on people’s vaccine certificate along with their other doses, Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci has said.
Gauci made the announcement on television during the programme Insights on TVM News+, where she explained that talks are underway at a European level for this to happen.
Gauci also noted that the Omicron variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant which was first detected in India, and that another two weeks are needed to establish whether the vaccine works against the new variant.
No cases of the Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa but has since been detected in the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands amongst others, have been found in Malta so far.
Gauci said that genome sequencing tests are being carried out so that if there is a case of the variant it would be detected immediately.
She said that there are around 25,000 people in Malta who have not been vaccinated yet, although this number is decreasing by between 50 and 100 every day.
She also said that there were no cases found relating to the Sigma Summit and that protocols are currently being drafted with the Electoral Commission for the upcoming general election.
