There was an increase in adoption requests, but not in actual adoptions over the Christmas period, the Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA) told The Malta Independent.

The association said that it makes sure that adoptions do not end up being treated as a present for a family member. A spokesperson said that some adoptions are guaranteed during the Christmas period after carefully considering the future owner’s working schedule, lifestyle, age and living conditions. Some seek the opportunity to train new dogs during this period as they would have more free days from work.

Further explaining the subject, she said that AAA would not place a young pup in the hands of an elderly couple as they are too demanding and energetic at that age.

In addition, a spokesperson for Tomasina Cat Sanctuary said that there was no increase in adoptions during this period. She added that people mostly ask for kittens, which sadly means that older cats are not requested as often.

Last month, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced the ‘Adopt a Pet Day event, which will take place on 16 January 2022. Its aim is for individuals and families interested in meeting pets who are waiting to be part of a family and those intrigued to learn about animals and their care.

Refalo said it took two years for the needed work to be done to raise awareness in terms of the best ways to care for pets.

Animal Welfare Director Patricia Azzopardi said that neutering helps save many cats and dogs from inevitable abandonment on the streets, whilst microchipping helps identify temporary strays.

The ‘Adopt a Pet Day’ event will take place at the Salesian Brigade Headquarters in Ghajn Tuffieha.
