A tree fell on a car as it was being driven in the direction of Paola this morning, the police said.

The circumstances of the accident are still being established by the police, with eyewitnesses saying that a heavy vehicle which was being driven in the same direction clipped the branch which fell on the car that was following it.

The woman who was in the car, a Peugeot, was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Members of the Civil Protection Department and the police are on site.

A medical team was also dispatched to the scene.

Damage was caused to the car as a heavy branch fell on its roof at around 8.45am.

The road was closed to traffic for a time.
