Bernard Grech stresses importance of Air Malta in meeting with unions

Thursday, 20 January 2022, 18:53 Last update: about 3 years ago

"Let us work together not to lose Air Malta," Opposition Leader Bernard Grech told unions and representatives of Air Malta workers during a meeting on Thursday.

"The PN has the political commitment not to lose the national airline as if that happens, the country will suffer," Bernard Grech said.

The government recently announced that half of Air Malta's workforce will be let go, being offered voluntary transfers as the airline struggled for its survival.

Grech said that "we have an obligation to listen, pay attention and see what the difficulties are in order to find solutions and move forward."

Grech said that the PN had a plan for Air Malta, "a plan that had started working, but was abandoned by the Labour Party." He was referring to the restructuring plan back in 2012.

"We need to study that plan and look at how with today's realities we can truly be an alternative so that even in this situation, we would ease the minds of Air Malta workers and their families, letting them know that they have a future."

"This country needs Air Malta and needs workers."

Grech said that Air Malta is an important flag for Malta and is indispensable on many economic levels. This situation, he said, needs to be resolves in the quickest possible time.
