Petition launched to allow non-seated weddings

Thursday, 20 January 2022, 11:29 Last update: about 3 years ago

A petition was launched appealing to the government and the health authorities to change the stagnant Covid-19 regulations currently in place for weddings.

At present, weddings can only occur if guests are seated.

Petitioner Danielle Scerri said that it is unfair that couples are having to spend more money for an un-ideal wedding.

She said that while restaurants and other establishments have been given the freedom to accommodate more people and events in the midst of the pandemic, the regulations on weddings have remained unchanged for a long period of time.

"This has caused excessive stress on couples who have either had to postpone their weddings or plan a seated one." The regulations in place have also caused financial struggles as seated weddings are more costly, she said.

Scerri appealed to the government for more feasible options in order to allow non-seated weddings, such as PCR test requirements for unvaccinatef people. She said that having seated weddings does not guarantee an exemption from contracting the virus.

At the time of writing, the petition garnered 1,249 signatures out of a target of 1,500.
